An Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground

During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book lodging when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Hailing from Singapore, I thought maybe I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and started wandering towards a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the night in a place that was open through the night. This was not ideal at my peak for acing an interview the following day, however, being a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

Our society requires more people who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed out of place because a female student saw me walking aimlessly through the city and asked whether I needed help. I explained my predicament and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered me some free dinner: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had from her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot to rest for the evening.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – yet very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of human compassion. I hope karma has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. The world needs more folks like that woman.
