The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor remarked when questioned about contemplating a campaign for president post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any decision is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
He has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would expand the party's congressional seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about Californians in a recent interview on a major news network. The secretary announced plans to withhold federal funds from the state and warned eliminating the state's ability to issue CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," he said, after a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.
The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was holding back additional funds from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a recent statement addressing the funding warnings. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
A recent survey showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The thought that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
