Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Sparked the Controversy

The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in military or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all made an oath to safeguard and defend this founding document," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to execute orders that break the law or our constitution."

The Former President's Furious Reaction

The clip seemed to provoke a heated reply from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate publication, he declared: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats released a combined statement condemning the statements.

"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our nation with exceptional loyalty and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the security of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement added.

Representatives' Defiant Answer

The representatives who were featured in the video also released a declaration.

"We are former service members and defense specialists who care for this United States and took an oath to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "Every American must join forces and condemn the ex-president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."

More Political Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."

The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and determine all that."

White House Statement

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."

"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the official said. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the president's proper directives."

She added: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
