Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's New Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Win

After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Campaign Built On Law and Order and Immigration

Noted for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly built on promises to combat increasing violence and significantly curb migration.

He frequently pointed to foreigners, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.

His plans included Trump-inspired measures such as constructing camps, barriers, electric fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost border.

Within a Regional Trend

Numerous analysts see Kast's success as fitting into a wider right-wing shift in South America, similar to recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts also view it as a part of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Clear Majority

Despite his decisive electoral victory, Kast does not command an absolute majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if various conservative parties are counted together.

This legislative landscape may complicate his agenda, such as a promise to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"We have many questions about how a Kast presidency will be that are uncertain because he has not said how he will implement them," commented a political expert.

The analyst continued, "Regarding economic policy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right. However where there is considerably less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the campaign."
