Germany's Mayor Critically Injured in Stabbing Attack, Authorities Report

A newly-elected mayor in western Germany has been attacked with a knife and suffered severe wounds near her home, police say.

Iris Stalzer, 57, is a affiliate of the SPD political group and became the mayor of the municipality in the North-Rhine Westphalia state in last month.

Area law enforcement report a significant response is under way in the small town. Officials indicate all avenues are being explored, but they are considering a family connection.

The Chancellor censured what he called "a terrible crime", adding: "We are concerned about the survival of the newly elected mayor, the victim, and wish for complete healing."

The party said its members were deeply shocked by the attack.

Officials confirm her two children - a daughter, 17, and a 15-year-old son - made an emergency call to authorities at midday local time (11:00 British time).

The minors were later taken away for questioning and evidence collection. A reporter at the scene observed a young person getting into a police patrol car.

During the summer, there was an family conflict episode in the family, which was recorded by the police, security sources said.
