Glasgow Commanding in Four-Try Win at Sale in European First Round

Glasgow Warriors kicked off their European journey in ideal fashion with a crucial bonus-point win on the road against Sale Sharks.

With the elements at their backs, the hosts began strongly and built a 14-0 lead within 20 minutes. Scores from Ernst van Rhyn and youngster Ollie Davies gave them early control.

But, Glasgow fought back admirably with a pair of scores before the interval. Forward Hiddleston and flanker Rory Darge both went over to narrow the deficit.

Further second-half tries from captain Kyle Steyn and centurion Stafford McDowall extended Glasgow's lead to twelve points. Marius Louw's try for the hosts set up a tense finish, but the visitors held firm to claim a significant first-round win.

Glasgow Seize Initiative Following Interval

Play started with a quick try as skipper Ernst van Rhyn drove over from short distance after just two minutes. A first-half knock to midfielder Ma'asi-White introduced teenager Davies into the fray for his European debut.

The youngster made an immediate contribution. Switching to fly-half, he took a good support line to take an pass and touch down, making Sale's advantage.

Facing difficult weather, Glasgow used their forward power to get back into the game. A strong driving maul was touched down by hooker Gregor Hiddleston. Prior to the half, Darge forced his way over, with Hastings' kick making it a two-point deficit at half-time.

Glasgow seized the advantage for the first time early in the second half. A poor box-kick was gathered by number eight Jack Dempsey, who set up captain Kyle Steyn to burst through a challenge and sprint to the try-line.

With in the ascendancy, Glasgow clinched the bonus point when Stafford McDowall ran through a tackle to celebrate his 100th appearance for the club. This try capped a run of 26 consecutive points.

The hosts found a lifeline when Louw used good skills to score. The conversion made it a five-point game with minutes remaining.

A final chance came for Sale from a throw in the 22, but they failed to secure the possession, sealing Glasgow's victory.

Looking Ahead

Sale Sharks must bounce back ahead of a trip to face Clermont this weekend. In contrast, Glasgow will welcome six-time winners Toulouse to their home ground.

The two sides are drawn in a strong first pool that also features Saracens and Durban-based outfit the Sharks.
