Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
