King Sorrow by Joseph Hillstrom King Review – An Dragon-Fired Horror Saga Delivers Masterpiece-Level Thrills

A group of six quirky but brave kids encounter the way of a vast and fearsome otherworldly malevolence that has invaded our realm from the outer limits of darkness. They must devote their lives battling it, facing one nightmare after another in the ordeal.

A Resonant Storyline with a New Twist

This is the plot, roughly, of Stephen King’s seminal work It (his best; no arguments). It is also the plot of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s new chilling tome, in which six friends summon the primordial, utterly malevolent dragon the Sorrowful Monarch from the Abyssal Void to help them defeat some villains. Unsurprisingly, their supernatural ritual goes awry.

Acknowledging a Family Legacy

Joseph Hillström King started his career striving diligently to distance himself from his renowned parent, adopting the nom de plume he maintains to this day and avoiding meeting his agent (he bears a striking resemblance to his parent). Yet with this recent release, he leans into it. Several quotes that consciously reflect some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that recalls a King plot point (a game of puzzles). In this whopper of a novel, Joe Hill takes pleasure in his family connection, and the audience revels alongside.

Meet the Protagonists

Focusing on the companions: most are scholars at the imagined the esteemed institution in the New England state. There’s Arthur, studious and gifted, cracking historical enigmas in his leisure hours; the character Colin, affluent, clever, and known for crushing obstacles in his path; twins Donna and Donovan; the beautiful Allie. Then we have Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but becomes a key part of their band as they dabble, somewhat credulous, half not, in arcane arts.

The Fateful Ceremony

Arthur is, as a result of external pressures, forced into stealing valuable volumes from his treasured institution’s archives by a bunch of local criminals. This tears at his bookish heart, especially when he’s made to take the institution’s prized and disturbing publication: the logbook of practitioner this enigmatic character (condemned “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the book’s jacket is crafted from his flesh). The intrepid group peruse the diary, learn they can invoke what the author references as a armored demon” to aid our hero with his coercion issue – and devote the remaining story reaping the consequences. The dragon will indeed rid them of those troublesome local drug dealers, but they are required to pick a fresh offering each year or fall prey to the beast. As Arthur later puts it: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is more dragons.”

Genre Dexterity and Imaginative Scope

Spanning forty years, Joe Hill transitions with seamless grace across narrative styles: as the allies endeavor to address the predicament they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, picking people who are obviously evil to sacrifice, or seeking means to kill the dragon themselves, we transition from suspense to dark fantasy, clandestine torment to love story to terror. One particularly memorable shift was to a adventure narrative, within the subterranean depths below Cornwall, a part infused with the Lord of the Rings author that was magnificently horrifying.

A Detailed Mosaic of Dread and Hope

We encounter trolls – the classic variety and internet antagonists, properly scary and perfectly brought to life.
