The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The previous season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.
The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
