Barry Manilow has revealed that he received a diagnosis with lung cancer and will undergo an operation.
The 82-year-old singer, known for a string of beloved anthems from "Mandy" has made him one of pop musicās cherished entertainers, will have surgery to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to treat the disease, which is in its early stages.
āAs my fans are aware, I recently endured six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a recurrence of another five weeks.
āEven though I was past the infection and back on stage in Las Vegas, my excellent physician insisted on an MRI just to ensure that everything was OK.
āThe MRI discovered a tumor on my left side that must be removed. Itās sheer fortune (and a great doctor) that it was caught so early.ā
He has rescheduled a string of upcoming shows, but suggested he would be back on stage by Valentineās Day for his longstanding residency at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.
He added: āThe doctors do not believe it has spread and Iām having examinations to confirm their diagnosis. So, thatās it. Chemo is not needed. No radiation. Just home remedies and favorite shows.
āIām looking forward to until I come back to my second home in Las Vegas for our Valentineās weekend concerts.ā
Manilow is now in the 16th year of a show at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the spotlight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his partner of many years, Garry Kief privately in 2014.
The couple were in a clandestine partnership for in excess of 35 years. In 2023, Manilow reflected on how important his partner had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
āAs my career exploded, it was just hectic. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can get into a lot of problems if you, you know, youāre alone repeatedly,ā he said.
āBut I encountered my future husband right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a partner to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.
āI wish that newcomers today donāt have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was fun.ā
