New Year's Celebrants Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Throughout the UK

Weather experts are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue In Spite of Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, meaning warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Issued

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
