The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and positive spirit brought him a vast and longstanding following.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
