The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
