It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
